PRIVACY CALL RELAY

In the article about the WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.20.1.73 update, we announced that WhatsApp was working on a new privacy relay option for calls. With this feature, users could enable an additional layer of privacy and security as the connection was relayed through WhatsApp servers. After installing the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.23.1.70 update from the TestFlight app, and certain previous updates of the app, we noticed that WhatsApp is rolling out the ability to protect the IP address in call!

As you can see in the attached screenshot, a new section called “Advanced” is available within the privacy settings screen. This section contains the new “protect IP address in calls” option to ensure a more secure experience during voice and video calls. If you enable this feature, WhatsApp will enhance privacy by implementing more robust measures to prevent others in a call from determining your location and IP address. In fact, calls made on your device will be securely routed through WhatsApp servers, ensuring an extra layer of security. Even with this feature enabled, your calls will remain end-to-end encrypted.

We believe this feature offers distinct advantages, especially in scenarios involving unknown contacts where you should prioritize your privacy. Enabling the new privacy call relay option definitely provides users with an additional layer of anonymity to your communication, which we find particularly helpful when interacting with people you haven’t yet established trust with. However, it’s worth mentioning that there may be a slight reduction in call quality in order to maintain this heightened level of security and safeguard your privacy.

The new privacy feature to protect the IP address in calls is available to some beta testers who install the latest updates of WhatsApp beta for iOS from the TestFlight app, and it’s rolling out to more people over the coming days.
