Exclusive ‘Inside Out 2’ clip reveals new emotion Self-loathing — and why she was cut

Inside Out 2 introduced us to new emotions like Anxiety (voiced by Stranger Things Maya Hawke) and Envy (voiced by The Bear‘s Ayo Edebiri). But an earlier version of the film featured another emotion: Self-loathing.

In the exclusive clip above, director Kelsey Mann introduces early concept art for Anxiety, who would eventually morph into Self-loathing. However, Mann and his team felt that Self-loathing felt too much like a “cardboard villain.” That realization shifted their approach towards Anxiety. As we see in the final film, all Anxiety’s actions now come from a place of wanting to help Riley (voiced by Kensington Tallman) — even if they often wind up hurting her instead.

You can see the early version of Anxiety in action in a deleted scene where Riley goes to a high school pool party. Self-consciousness quickly sets in, with the sequence feeling all too relatable (and even a little “cringe,” as Mann puts it).

Inside Out 2 arrives to digital retailers like Prime Video and AppleTV+ Aug. 20, and comes out on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD Sept. 10.
