PROTECT IP ADDRESS IN CALLS
In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.18.15 update, we posted news regarding a new privacy feature: a privacy relay option for calls. With this feature, users will be able to experiment with an additional layer of security when placing voice and video calls as WhatsApp will make it harder for other people to get your IP address. This feature is still in development on the Android app but, thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.20.1.73 update, which is available on the TestFlight app, we discovered that WhatsApp has plans to introduce the same feature to a future update of the iOS app!
As you can see in this screenshot, there will be a new section within the privacy settings screen to allow users to enable a more secure experience during voice and video calls. With the “protect IP address in calls” option, WhatsApp will make it definitely harder for other people in the call to infer your location and IP address as calls on your device will be securely relayed through their servers. Calls will still be end-to-end encrypted when enabling this option, but the call quality may be reduced to ensure the additional layer of security. It’s important to note that this feature is entirely optional, and users can choose whether to enable it based on their personal preferences and security concerns.
In our opinion, this feature is particularly beneficial when calling unknown contacts or engaging in conversations where you prioritize your privacy. By activating the call relay option, you will add an extra level of anonymity to your communication, and we think this is especially valuable when you’re interacting with people you haven’t previously established trust. As noted before, this added protection comes at the cost of potentially slower call quality, as the data has to travel through WhatsApp’s servers for anonymization. However, this trade-off ensures that your privacy is safeguarded, as WhatsApp will attempt to make your IP address hidden from malicious actors who may try to track it.
The new privacy feature to protect the IP address in calls is under development and it will be available in a future update of the app. We will keep you updated once we have further details to share.
